CFD Simulation · ONE-WAY-FSI-FLOW-PROBE-ANSYS-WORKBENCH

FSI in Ansys Workbench: Understanding 1-Way and 2-Way Coupling with Hands-On Flow Probe Simulation

Complete 1-way FSI workflow in Ansys Workbench - theory of fluid-structure coupling, Static Data Transfer vs System Coupling, and hands-on flow probe simulation at 100 m/s.

FSI in Ansys Workbench: Understanding 1-Way and 2-Way Coupling with Hands-On Flow Probe Simulation

About this project

If you have been working with CFD or FEA individually, this is where you take the next step. This project gives you a complete understanding of Fluid Structure Interaction, from the core theory of how fluids and structures interact, to the different modeling approaches available in Ansys, to a full hands-on 1-way FSI simulation of a flow probe exposed to a high velocity flow of 100 meters per second. What makes this project valuable is the build-up. We do not jump straight into software. We first establish a clear understanding of when to use 1-way versus 2-way coupling, how Static Data Transfer and System Coupling differ, and what actually makes a simulation 2-way under the hood. Then we execute a complete simulation and get real structural stress and deformation results out of it. This is the first project in a three-part FSI series. The next project steps up to 2-way transient FSI of a hyperelastic flap with dynamic remeshing, followed by aeroelastic wing deflection as a real engineering use case.

Learning outcomes

  1. Explain the difference between 1-way and 2-way FSI coupling, when to use each, and how they map to workflows inside Ansys Workbench.
  2. Link a converged Fluent CFD solution to a Static Structural system using a direct schematic connection for 1-way pressure load transfer.
  3. Import and verify CFD pressure loads onto structural mesh faces and confirm 100% node mapping.
  4. Solve for and interpret total deformation and Von Mises stress results from a 1-way FSI simulation.
