DLR-F6 Wing-Body External Aerodynamics - Full CFD Simulation Workflow in ANSYS Fluent

Production-ready DLR-F6 wing-body external aerodynamics CFD - geometry preparation through solver setup, post-processing, and experimental validation with y⁺ ≤ 1 transition modeling.

DLR-F6 Wing-Body External Aerodynamics - Full CFD Simulation Workflow in ANSYS Fluent

About this project

A production-ready external aerodynamics simulation of the DLR-F6 Wing-Body configuration, one of the most widely used benchmark cases in computational fluid dynamics. This project covers the complete CFD workflow from geometry preparation to post-processing and experimental data validation. The simulation is set up to capture laminar-to-turbulent flow transition across the aircraft surface. Special attention is given to the correct y⁺ selection and boundary layer setup ensuring the first mesh cell sits inside the viscous sublayer with y⁺ ≤ 1 across all aircraft surfaces, which is the fundamental requirement for accurate transition and skin friction prediction. Every solver setting and modelling decision is explained in detail so you understand not just what to select, but why, giving you the engineering judgment to apply the same approach to your own projects.

Learning outcomes

  1. Geometry preparation and watertight meshing workflow including named selections, local sizing controls, and boundary layer setup with correct y⁺ selection for transition modeling.
  2. Compressible flow solver setup and technical reasoning behind every setting selected.
  3. Setting up lift and drag monitors and validating simulation results against published DLR-F6 experimental wind tunnel data.
  4. Post-processing techniques including pressure contours, wall shear stress, and Mach number visualization across the aircraft surface.
